Are My Prayers Falling on Deaf Ears?
Published in Paperback by World Bible Pub Co (February, 1997)
Author: Andrew Steinmann
Average review score:

God is listening!
In the book "Are My Prayers Falling on Deaf Ears?", many of the common questions about prayer are answered from a scriptural perspective. Dr. Steinmann shows how the Bible teaches that prayer begins with "God's promise of mercy toward us," and that it is not "a way to manipulate God into answering our questions or solving our problems in the way we want them solved"(p. 12).

The structure of this book is to present a situation about prayer (i.e. God doesn't seem to be listening), and then examine several scriptural examples that correlate with this situation. Many of the prayers are taken from the book of Psalms, but other significant prayers are also covered, especially the Lord's Prayer. Steinmann provides an interesting discussion of the petitions of the Lord's Prayer and compares the Matthew and Luke versions. Another nice feature is that each chapter has highlighted points that are explained as you read.

This book would make an excellent basis for a topical Bible study on prayer, and could be divided up by chapter or even smaller sections. While the book provides explanations of dozens of Biblical prayers, it also offers many more examples (categorized within the chapters) that would be good for more in depth study and comparison. All in all I found "Are My Prayers Falling on Deaf Ears?" to be a sound treatment of prayer that offers Biblical hints on how to shape our own prayers.

Arlington National Cemetery: A Moment of Silence
Published in Hardcover by Preservation Press (March, 1994)
Authors: Owen Andrews and Cameron Davidson
Average review score:

One of the smallest, but best books on Arlington.
My father was buried at Arlington in 1987. Upon my visit for that service, and subsequent visits, I found very little in the gift shop and in bookstores at the time. As I am involved in the design profession as an art director, I am also a bit more choosy. I was drawn to this small, elegant book when I first noticed it on a shelf in a bookstore years ago. I purchased it on a visit to DC in 1991, and serendipitously, met and worked with the photographer, Cameron Davidson, years later on numerous years of commerical photography shoots, nationwide. I was amazed to learn he had photographed the wonderful book I chose above others to remember my powerful visit to Arlington with. Cameron's exquisite images truly evoke the feeling of visiting Arlington, and the writers words support his photos. His family has military ties and it comes across in the way he uniquely 'sees' Arlington. My only wish is that this book was larger, and still in print. Anyone with any connection to Arlington deserves to be able to obtain this lovely book.

The armed forces of World War II : uniforms, insignia, and organisation
Published in Unknown Binding by Orbis ()
Author: Andrew Mollo
Average review score:

Great view of ALL the armed forces of World War II
If you are looking for a great book about all the armed forces that battled during World War II this is it! The author includes in this great book uniforms, insignia, equipment (not a lot here but it is good enough) and organizations of the armies, navies and air forces that fought in World War Two. He also mentions the changes that took place in the gear depending on the fronts or date of the action. One of the best things I like is the tables at the end on the book that compare the graduation between the different armies and they give the graduation in the actual language (for example Colonel=Oberst for German army) Take a look at it, it is quite good.

The Armed Forces of World War II: Uniforms, Insignia and Organization

Well-organized and beautifully illustrated reference work
This is the DEFINITIVE reference book on the uniforms of WWII. Mollo carefully explains his terms and illustrates them in this handy, well-organized work. Individual illustrations of patches, epaulets and weapons are complemented by contemporary, hand-colored photographs of a wide variety of uniforms. Excellent!

Arrested Development: Pop Culture and the Erosion of Adulthood
Published in Hardcover by Cassell Academic (June, 1998)
Author: Andrew Calcutt
Average review score:

An outstanding analysis of contemporary society.
'Arrested Development' is a brilliant critique of the relationship between popular culture and today's society. Politicians with little to offer in the way of vision, turn to popular culture to try and look for a dynamism that they haven't got.

Calcutt's book exposes the superficiality of this embrace and the divisive consequences it has for today's society. The author also writes with great honesty about his own forays into pop culture and all of it's follies which many of us have fallen for in our youth.

The book puts forward the case for adulthood in an environment where it appears more desirable to remain a Peter Pan character espousing throwaway 'popstar' type attitudes rather than develop the critical faculties and reflective capabilities that come with maturity.

The Assault
Published in Paperback by Penguin USA (Paper) (June, 1995)
Authors: Reinaldo Arenas and Andrew Hurley
Average review score:

If "Before Night Falls" caught you.....
Hopefully the successful audience response to the film of Arenas' "Before Night Falls" will encourage readers to explore the unique and vastly enriching glimpses of Castro's (or any dictator's for that matter) Cuba. The author's style is indelibly his own, reporting and commenting on the conditions of political supression, whether he elects to satirize in the first person/s as in "Color of Summer" with its over the edge surreal view of contemporary Cuba, or placing the narrator from within as in "The Assault". Truth, as he viewed it, is so ludicrous that it becomes black comedy, not unlike Goya's "Goyescas". But for all the unsettling details of this tale of destruction of all that matters in our past, this book, once read burns a spot in our minds that makes it almost necessary to revisit it lest we forget the joy of freedom. Tough reading, but highly recommended.

Atari Roots
Published in Paperback by Reston Pub Co (September, 1984)
Author: Mark Andrews
Average review score:

An introductory guide to Atari 8 bit assembler.
This book is the most concise introduction to 6502 assembler with specific application to the Atari 8 bit line of computers that I have read. It compliments Mapping The Atari and De Re Atari quite nicely. Some topics of note include IOCB and Atari graphics, and a bit of sample source code for these are included.
